Early Childhood/Special Education Major, P-5

The Early Childhood/Special Education program offers a dual major in early childhood and special education, preparing students to work in both fields in grades P-5. All ECE/SPED cohorts begin in the fall semester. During the fall placement, candidates are assigned to selected area schools and expected to attend preplanning along with the classroom teachers (junior & senior years).

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Teacher Education Program, a student must:

  1. complete 50 semester hours of core curriculum credit applicable to the ECE/SPED degree program with an overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher;
  2. complete all of Area F with a grade of "C" or better;
  3. complete all courses in Area A of the core curriculum with a grade of "C" or better;
  4. provide a passing score on the GACE Basic Skills Assessment test or its equivalent (see the Teacher Education Department for registration and exemption information);
  5. complete an application for admission to the Teacher Education Program. Application deadline is posted on the department web page;
  6. provide an updated criminal background check through www.certifiedbackground.com.
  7. provide proof of liability insurance valid through projected graduation date. This insurance can be purchased through either of the professional educational organizations listed on the application form or through a rider on the applicant's homeowner or umbrella insurance policy.
  8. select a Math in Area D. MATH 2400 is strongly recommended. Any course chosen must receive a grade of "C" or better. Students need two math courses as a pre-requisite for MATH 2008, which is an Area F requirement for ECE/SPED majors.
  9. receive a satisfactory evaluation of candidate disposition provided by Area F instructors.

Core Curriculum Requirements

60 Hours

All baccalaureate programs at North Georgia have as a requirement the satisfactory completion of at least 60 semester credit hours comprising the six areas of the core curriculum. A complete description of Areas A-E of the core curriculum can be found in Core Curriculum.

Early Childhood/Special Education makes no exceptions in Areas A-E of the core.
