ENGL 2135: African American Literature (3)

This course will provide students with a survey of African American texts from the slave narrative to contemporary poetry and fiction. The class will explore in assigned readings issues of identity, as well as political and social agency, or lack thereof. We will also examine the ways in which literary form can be used to shape identity and to gain agency, either by conforming to social ideologies or by subverting them. Pre-requisite: ENGL 1102 with a grade of C or better
