ART 7530: Renaissance Art History (3)

The course examines the development of painting, sculpture, prints, & architecture of the early, high & late Renaissance & Mannerist periods (the fourteenth through the first half of the sixteenth centuries) in Italy, France, the Holy Roman Empire (including Germany), the Netherlands, & Spain. Using a combined chronological, comparative, & thematic approach, emphasis will be placed on the distinct contributions of specific artists & of different regions. The economic, philosophical, religious, political, & cultural development of early modern European society & cities in these periods will be explored in detail. Significant outside readings will be incorporated into class discussions, & will be the basis for two analytical papers.
